As you prepare for the fantasy season, whether it be your home league, a big money squad or with us at Champions Round, we want you to be as prepared as possible heading into the season. And most of all we want to see you win!
The Saints enter a new era in 2021, without the services of future Hall of Fame member Drew Brees. New Orleans moves forward with former No. 1 pick Jameis Winston, who has impressed in preseason play. Of course, that is not the only notable storyline on offense. Star receiver Michael Thomas is set to miss at least the first couple of weeks of the season after undergoing offseason surgery. We don’t know when he’ll be back, but it’s not going to be any time soon.
Meanwhile, the Saints defense brings back a talented group that should provide a nice floor. If the Saints are to make a run at the playoffs this year, it falls on the play of Winston and his playmakers not named Alvin Kamara.
Champions Round “JUICE” Projections
2021 Expected Record: 10-7
2021 Expected Points Per Game: 24.5
2021 Expected Points Allowed Per Game: 22.5
Jameis Winston - Rank: QB18
JUICE Projections: 334-515 Passing, 66% Completion, 4017 Passing Yds., 25 TD, 15 INT; 57 Rushing Yds, 1 Rush TD
Taysom Hill - Rank: QB34
JUICE Projections: 45-79 Passing, 68% Completion, 624 Passing Yds., 2 TD, 1 INT; 327 Rushing Yds, 3 Rush TD
If anyone can get Winston to play within the offense and limit turnovers, it’s Sean Payton. I have no doubt Payton will put the former Heisman winner in a position to succeed. It’s not going to be perfect, but it’ll be better than what we saw in Tampa Bay. I think he’s a sneaky great pick at the end of drafts.
Meanwhile, Taysom Hill will go back to his Swiss army knife role. It probably doesn’t make him a viable fantasy piece, but he’s going to be on the field a ton this year. If Winston struggles with turnovers, Hill could be a great fantasy piece.
Alvin Kamara - Rank: RB2
JUICE Projections: 202 carries, 970 Rushing Yds, 12 Rush TD; 86 receptions, 721 Receiving Yds, 4 Rec. TD
Latavius Murray - Rank: RB39
JUICE Projections: 148 carries, 636 Rushing Yds, 5 Rush TD; 21 receptions, 155 Receiving Yds, 1 Rec. TD
Just draft both of these running backs. Kamara is going to be an absolute monster this year, as he is every year. Murray has stand alone value and RB1 upside if Kamara goes down.
Marquez Callaway - Rank: WR47
JUICE Projections: 64 receptions, 742 Receiving Yds, 6 Rec. TD
Callaway is probably being overdrafted due to his one big preseason game. But given his clear connection with Winston and the lack of talent around him at receiver, maybe the ADP is correct. He’s worth a mid round flyer.
Tre’Quan Smith - Rank: WR75
JUICE Projections: 47 receptions, 621 Receiving Yds, 3 Rec. TD
Smith could end up being Winston’s top target without Thomas in the lineup, but I would rather bet on Callaway. If Smith drops into the 12th round or later I would consider taking him.
Michael Thomas - Rank: WR61
JUICE Projections: 55 receptions, 675 Receiving Yds, 5 Rec. TD
What to do with Thomas? I think if he drops to the 7th or 8th rounds in your drafts, he’s worth a shot. If he only misses 6 weeks, he’s a very valuable piece. Imagine adding a WR1 midseason without giving up any assets? It’s in the cards.
Adam Trautman - Rank: TE9
JUICE Projections: 57 receptions, 608 Receiving Yds, 5 Rec. TD
Trautman got injured during the preseason but is fine. However, he was not impressive during the preseason before his injuries. I still believe in the talent and the opportunity. His target share without Michael Thomas could still be massive, but it’s harder to buy into a full break out after his preseason performance.
Juwan Johnson - Rank: TE42
JUICE Projections: 30 receptions, 293 Receiving Yds, 2 Rec. TD
Johnson has come on strong in preseason and is firmly the TE2 right now in New Orleans. He could have a nice role. Still, he’s not really a fantasy piece right now. Keep an eye on him.
TL;DR 2021 New Orleans Saints
- Jameis Winston should be a good fantasy buy late in drafts
- Kamara should go 2nd or 3rd overall in all drafts
- Buy low on Michael Thomas is he drops past the 7th round
- Adam Trautman could have a big break out season
Thanks for reading and good luck in your drafts! Next Up: the New York Giants!
