49ers down to Mac Jones, Trey Lance at No. 3

On Sunday night news broke that the San Francisco 49ers were closing in on their QB of the future with their No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport reported that the 49ers brass is deciding between Alabama’s Mac Jones and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.

This news doesn’t come as a surprise to most that have followed the news wire since the 49ers traded with the Miami Dolphins. It’s pretty clear at this point that the 49ers were fine with all three QBs (Jones, Lance and Justin Fields) but they had initially targeted Jones.

They’ve since done multiple workouts and seen each QB in person and are likely still going to take Jones, but are discussing the option of taking Lance. If you follow the betting markets, Jones is still the favorite to be taken at No. 3.

So where does that leave the former Ohio State QB? Well, he’s going to make it past San Francisco, that much is clear. But what teams are interested in him and how far could he fall?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on his podcast that he believes there’s around a 95% chance that Fields is available at No. 7. The Atlanta Falcons could take Fields at No. 4, but they are reportedly set on Florida Tight End Kyle Pitts if they keep the pick. The Bengals are likely to take LSU receiver Ja’Marr Chase at No. 5 (though they could take Oregon tackle Penei Sewell) and the Dolphins are focused on either a receiver, tackle or trading back.

If Fields makes it to No. 7, would Detroit Lions take their QB of the future? Or would they trade the pick to a team like the Denver Broncos or New England Patriots. Right now the betting markets believe the Broncos and Patriots are the favorites to take Fields, followed by Atlanta and San Francisco.

My opinion: I think Fields will either get taken at No. 7 or No. 8 by a team trading up for him and he won’t slip past No. 9 with the Broncos.
